December Counselor’s Corner

by Ellie Bucciarelli: High School Programs Student Counselor

December is here and for many the holiday fun has begun! I hope everyone had the opportunity to take time with family and friends over Thanksgiving, sharing food and traditions wherever you spent the holiday. December holidays around the world are all celebrated differently. Here are some quick suggestions to help make this month special:

Share your family traditions and start early!

If you celebrate St. Nicholas Day back in your country and have host siblings, be sure to have them set out their shoes so you can fill them with sweets!

Make a traditional dish from your country for the holiday celebration.

Make holiday cookies with your student if this is a tradition in your home.

Make sure to ask/tell expectations for giving at the holiday time.

Try something new you have always thought of doing, but never did.

How can you give back? In what way can you volunteer or help your community?

Be prepared to travel or for guests to stay at the house. Please make sure your student knows how your holiday works, who they will be meeting, if there will be guests staying over or if there will be travel.

Set expectations for Winter Break. Will you be in town, working, or have other obligations? Make sure to keep the communication open so everyone has updates!

Set expectations/ask questions for New Year’s Eve.

Most of all, enjoy this time together sharing traditions and making new memories together.
